My First Challenge with HTML & CSS: Getting Started with VS Code
The first steps that made VS Code, project folders, index.html, and browser previews feel manageable.
When I started learning HTML and CSS, my first problem was not knowing how to use Visual Studio Code or create an index.html file and figuring out how to handle it was a real challenge. At first, all the buttons, menus and panels in VS Code felt overwhelming. I didn’t even know where to start writing my code.
I struggled with this at first, but by figuring it out, I hope you can avoid the same confusion, here's how:
1) Install Visual Studio Code:
Download and install VS Code from the official website. It’s free and available for all major operating systems.
2) Create a Project Folder:
Before opening VS Code, create a folder on your computer to store your website files. For example, name it "MyFirstWebsite".
3) Open Your Folder in VS Code:
Launch VS Code and go to 'File', then 'Open Folder' to open the folder you just created. This helps VS Code organize your files and makes working on your project easier.
4) Create an index.html File:
Right click on your folder in VS Code’s sidebar, choose 'New File', and name it "index.html". This will be the main file for your website.
5) Write Your First HTML Code:
Start by adding the basic structure of a web page including headings, paragraphs and titles. Focus on getting your content on the page first. After writing your code, save the file using Ctrl + S.
6) View Your Website in a Browser:
Once saved, open the file in your browser to see your website. This allows you to check how your page looks and make changes as needed.
Once I got comfortable with these steps, everything else like adding CSS to style my pages became much easier. Starting with VS Code and a simple 'index.html' file is the first big step to becoming a web developer.
