CSS Styling Problems Beginners Face
A practical guide to missing styles, selectors, specificity, !important, and the box model.
CSS can be confusing at first. Your code looks right, but the design doesn’t change. Don’t worry, these issues are normal and faced by almost every beginner.
1. CSS Not Applying at All
Often caused by:
- Wrong file path.
- Typos in class or id names.
- CSS file not linked properly.
Fix: Recheck the <link> tag, match names exactly, and test with a simple style like changing the body background.
2. Class (.) vs ID (#) Confusion
Using the wrong selector means styles won’t work.
Fix:
- Use classes for reusable styles.
- Use IDs only for unique elements.
3. CSS Specificity Issues
Styles don’t apply because another rule has higher priority.
Fix: Write cleaner selectors and avoid unnecessary nesting instead of forcing styles.
4. Overusing "!important"
It works temporarily but creates problems later.
Fix: Fix selector issues first. Use "!important" only as a last option.
5. Box Model Confusion
Misunderstanding margin, padding, border and sizing breaks layouts.
Fix: Learn the box model and use "box-sizing: border-box" to keep layouts predictable.
